REGIÃO DO BARROSO

VIANDE DE BAIXO - MONTALEGRE

-----***-----

Santa Maria de Viade

Santa Maria de Viade takes pride in its glorious past, marked by notable remnants, though often challenging to study due to a total lack of documentation.

Among these remnants is the beautiful Solar dos Queridos (Queridos Manor), distinguished by an impressive coat of arms belonging to the Barrosos and Mouras, as well as the now-extinct Chapel of Santa Rita.

The difficulty of unearthing the true history of these and other monuments from the obscurity of time has led to a proliferation of legends surrounding them.

The Regavão Valley, bordering the parish to the south and east, is crossed by the ancient Via Prima, marked here by a giant milestone that was later transformed into the Leiranque Cross.

Not far from this site was a fulling mill that lent its name to the Pisões Dam. Further up, one finds the ancient Vila de Mel, likely the first "statio" (with São Vicente da Chã being the second) between the cities of Praesidium and Caladunum, stops along this imperial road.

Here, you can still see the necropolis, with graves carved into soft, sandy granite that continue to crumble due to wind and water erosion. Efforts to preserve them are urgently needed.

From more recent eras, there is an abundance of historical information that could fill numerous volumes.
