Vimioso and its History
Vimioso is located in Nordeste Transmontano, on a plateau between the Maçãs and Angueira rivers, tributaries of the Sabor river.
Its relief is characterized by very steep cliffs on the banks of the Angueira, Maçãs and Sabor rivers and flat land with good vegetable gardens and where olive, almond, vine, cork oak and other species are cultivated.
Vimioso's economy is based on agriculture.
The villages that border the municipality of Miranda do Douro are influenced by the accent of the dialect of the Planalto Mirandês.
Annually, the Feira de S. Lourenço takes place on the 10th of August. It's a municipal holiday.
Twenty years ago it was an important concentration of cattle where large animal deals were carried out, mainly Mirandese cattle.
Currently, on that day, a livestock contest is held, with animals of the Mirandese breed to which specimens worthy of being appreciated, especially in the bull class, compete.
The bull fight is part of the festive program of S. Lourenço.
The smokehouse manufactured throughout the county is of great quality. The alheiras or tabafeias are excellent, the chorizo, the salpicão, the butelo, the sour, the chaviano, are highly appreciated specialties.
